Is your brand at risk for online identity theft?: What you need know and do

by Scott Hoffman on July 10, 2009

Is your brand at risk for online identity theft? Recently I wrote a popular post about the importance of defending your companies online brand on the top 30 social networks. I was in search of an easier & more efficient way to assess how “at risk” a brand was for identity theft, and I found a great resource.

I discovered the free service Namechk. When you visit the site, you can search 60+ social network sites and let you know if your Brand name is available or taken. Instantly you become aware of your brands exposure to identity theft. This is a very solid starting point in lowering your risk.

Here is a screenshot of the Namechk service:

In the example above I searched “MasterCard” and the results are clearly displayed. As I mentioned this is a really good starting point to lowering your risk that your company will suffer a case of online brand identity theft.

As an immediate second step, I would encourage a visit each site that was relevant to your brand, to see if you have secured the brand name, or if you have been a victim of brand identity theft.

Hat Tip to the Namechk team (David Gosse and Andy Edinborough) Nice work!

In my recent article, I talk about the fact that online credit card theft often results in 600 hours of work on the victim’s part to fix the damage. Amazing isn’t it? What could you have done in those 600 hours?
